Divisional Accountant is one of the few posts offered into SSC CGL which are low profile and yet reasonably powerful and respected. As a divisional accountant, you would be posted into state government PWD offices, irrigation offices and other such offices where you are supposed to act as a chief accountant or financial advisor to that office. Salary of Divisional Accountant CAG
Salary has been revised effective from 1/1/2016 in 7th pay commission. According to which the starting basic salary of Divisional Accountant CAG would be 35,400 Rs in 7th pay commission. DA (Dearness Allowance) would be 0% from 1/1/2016 but it would be revised from July-2016 and so on. Apart form DA you’d also get HRA ( Housing Rent Allowance ) and TA ( Travelling Allowance ) which are different for various class of cities. You would also get TA/DA in this post while on tour. Work profile of Divisional Accountant CAG
As a divisional accountant, you would work in some state government development office. You may be working in PWD office, irrigation office, public health office or any other state government office. These offices are also called divisions. Your work would be checking and passing various bills raised by the division you are working in. You would report directly to the executive engineer but only when it is related to the normal work. He is not your direct boss as you are a central government officer working in a state government division. The divisional accountant cadre is controlled by concerned state accountant general office and you can’t be transferred outside of that state cadre except when there’s a mutual situation and you are still under probation.
Work load wise it is a good post. There’s a little to moderate work load in most of the offices and you can relax,chill or do whatever you like in most of the time. You are also given some sub ordinate staff as per the work load and so the work becomes even easier for you. Have some good knowledge of the division and the kind of work it is doing and some knowledge of accountancy and financial auditing and you should be good to go. Also, unlike other SSC CGL jobs, you won’t start working from the day one as there’s a training and probation period of around 2 years. You would be asked for the preference for cities you want to work in. Initially, you would work into some division given to you into the city you preferred. You would work there for 6 months under some Divisional Accountant or Divisional Accounts Officer and learn the work. This is not a formal training and you would learn some things only if you are passionate enough and your senior officer is interested in teaching you. Once this period is over, you would undergo a formal training at the city of your state AG office for 10 months. After that, you would get a posting in some division, mostly in some low work pressured and less sensitive division. Also, after the training, you are supposed to sit into DAGE (Divisional Accountant Grade Examination). You are confirmed after clearing this exam. If you don’t clear this exam in the first attemt, you get more chances (up to 6) to clear the exam but you are not confirmed in the divisional accountant job untill you clear this exam.
Promotion of Divisional Accountant CAG
Promotion wise this is okay post. You get first promotion of Divisional Account Officer – II in a 4600 Rs. grade pay.After that the second promotion is of Divisional Account Officer – I in a grade pay of 4800 Rs. and it is a gazetted post also. After that the final promotion in this post is of Sr. Divisional Account Officer, which is a post with a grade pay of 5400 Rs. Time to get promotions is not predictable and varies from state to state.
Apart from these regular promotions, you can also appear for SAS (Subordinate Account Service) exam after completion of 2 years of service as a divisional accountant. After clearing the SAS exam, you can become AAO (Assistant Audit Officer) in CAG which is a group-B gazetted post with a grade pay of 4800 Rs.
Where to put Divisional Accountant CAG post in your SSC CGL preference list if you are a female candidate
It’s a post which is also fine for girls as the work involved is of desk nature and also there are less transfers and your preferences are somewhat considered. Yet, it should be on around no.10-11 in your preference list. You should keep it after Income Tax Inspector, Assistant in CSS, Central Excise Inspector or all the other Assistant posts and interview posts of your liking. You can also get a home posting in this job as CAG has offices in all the states of the country.
Divisional Accountant CAG in preference list of a male candidate
If you are a male candidate, it should be in top 10 according to your personality. If you are a peace loving guy who want a white collar job near to home along with reasonable social status and interaction, this post can be in your top 10 list. But, if you want a job with more adventurous and more lucrative nature, you should try and score more for Examiner, Preventive Officer, AEO, Central Excise Inspector or Income Tax Inspector. You would have a better career with better growth in those posts when compared with Divisional Accountant post.
