Salary has been revised effective from 1/1/2016 in 7th pay commission. According to which the starting basic salary of Inspector of Posts would be 44,900 Rs in 7th pay commission. DA (Dearness Allowance) would be 0% from 1/1/2016 but it would be revised from July-2016 and so on. Apart form DA you’d also get HRA ( Housing Rent Allowance ) and TA ( Travelling Allowance ) which are different for various class of cities. You would also get TA/DA in this post while on tour. Work profile of Inspector of Posts
As an Inspector of Posts you would mostly be posted in some division or sub division post office. More chances are that you would be posted into sub division as a main authority over there. There are also chances of posting at some other place like HQ or PG (Public Grievances) cell/section of “India Post”. In short, you can be posted in any section of “India Post” as per their will.
Now, if you are posted into sub division post office, your work would involve many things. Starting from supervising Postmen and Multi-Tasking Skill (MTS) staff and GDS (Gram Dak Sevaks) to selling PLI (Postal Life Insurance) and assisting senior officers into their inspection. Work can also be varied as per your section and posting. Selling insurances and other financial products may be somewhat tough initially but in the end you would learn to do that so don’t worry too much about that.
You are supposed to do marketing for PLI and other products so that’s a different kind of task in this post but you may also earn some incentives by selling those products so that would be an added advantage if you can get some business.
In comparison with other inspector posts this post has some more work load but you also get some authority and junior staff so that is the plus point. If you are not able to get any other better inspector or Group B post, you can opt for this post.
Promotion opportunities for Inspector of Posts
You would be eligible to appear for departmental promotion exam after completion of 5 years working as an inspector of posts. If passed, you would become Assistant Superintendent of Post (ASP) which is a Group B non gazetted post with Grade Pay of Rs. 4600. Next Promotion from there would be of Postal Superintendent which is a Group B gazetted post with Grade Pay of Rs. 4800. Further promotions from there would be of Postal Superintendent (Grade Pay 5400),Senior Superintendent of post with a Grade Pay of Rs. 5400 which is Equal rank to Indian Postal Services Officer and Senior Superintendent of post with a Grade Pay of Rs. 6600. Time to get all these promotions depend on when you pass promotion exams and vacancies in the higher posts. You can say that it’s a good post for promotions if you pass first promotion exam as soon as possible otherwise you would not get that many promotions. Inspector of Posts in SSC CGL preference list if you are a female candidate
It should be after other Assistant and Inspector posts in your preference list. It can’t be in your top-10 but it should be before Group C posts except Income Tax Inspector and Divisional Accountant posts which should be in your top 10 list. There may be some travelling involved so take that into account as well. You can also get a home posting in this job as India Post offices are spread throughout the country but there are limited posts so it’s not always easy.

After your top 10 list and before other Group C posts except Income Tax Inspector and Divisional Accountant posts which should be in your top 10 list. You can also get a home posting in this job as India Post offices are spread throughout the country but as I mentioned above, it’s not easy. Travelling should not be a big concern for male candidates but it’s there and it would consume time so consider that.
