Preventive Officer Job Profile

Preventive Officer (P.O.) is the only customs post with uniform offered through SSC CGL. You may have seen PO’s at airports or at sea ports wearing white uniform. Just like Central Excise Inspector and Examiner, you would be recruited into CBEC (Central Board of Excise and Customs) as a Group – B (Non Gazetted) officer.

CBEC is a government of India organization which works towards collection and monitoring of indirect taxes in India. It collects indirect taxes and duties like Central Excise duty, Customs duty and Service tax. A white uniform is compulsory for Preventive Officer (P.O.). Preventive Officers are posted mostly in 11 coastal cities like Mumbai, Kolkata, Kochin or Chennai etc which are into 6 custom zones Kolkata, Kochin, Visakhapatnam, Chennai, Mumbai and Goa. You should consider that before opting for this post. If your home town is not one of these 11 coastal cities then you may never get a posting in your home town. Let’s discuss more about Preventive Officer Job Profile.

As a Preventive Officer (P.O.), you would get either field posting or office posting. If you are posted in office, just like other SSC jobs, you will do a lot of file and paperwork. In field posting, you would feel like actual customs preventive officer. Your duty would include stopping smuggling activities and monitoring proper and timely payment of various duties levied by Indian customs dept. You will have some executive powers like you can arrest, search, seize or detain things or people if you have information or doubts over them. You will have to wear the uniform while on duty. The work is usually divided into shifts as customs prevention is round the clock process. You will have to be ready to work in different shifts according to the duty changes.

Where to put Preventive Officer (P.O.) in your preference list if you are a male candidate?

If you are a male candidate and want an adventurous job with a good social and professional status, this job should be in top 5 of your preference list. If you are not keen for Delhi posting, this post should be after AAO, Examiner and Income Tax Inspector in your preference list (On No. 4). Preventive Officer (P.O.) can be a great choice for any person who wants a daring job which involves some challenges, risks and rewards. You have a chance to investigate smuggling and duty evasion cases. You can also go to any place in the country for the purpose of investigation and to nab criminals.

Where to put Preventive Officer (P.O.) in your preference list if you are a female candidate?

This post is generally not recommendable for girls as it involves a risk and uncertainty. You have to work in shifts and sometimes for longer duration without a break. It may take a toll in future when you have a child and a full family to take care of. Also, when you are dealing with criminals and smugglers, there are many kinds of risks involved. Though it is not like girls can’t go for this post. If you have proper knowledge and readiness to take up this job, you can opt for this job. But if you ask me, I would any day suggest a female candidate to opt for Income Tax Inspector, Assistant CSS or other assistants ( If possible to live in Delhi ) or Central Excise Inspector instead of this post. As in these posts, you’ll get the same benefits with lesser hardships.

Conclusion of Preventive Officer (P.O.) job profile

This is a very good post for male candidates moderately recommendable for females. Yet, in the end, you should always take your own decisions after analyzing every factor about this or any other post. You are very helpful person.
    Once again thank you.

  5. I got selected for PO in SSC CGL 2015. I am already an Excise Inspector posted in Gujarat from SSC CGL 2014. Give me some advice regarding switching to PO. I want to know what are the transfer policies in PO and how is Mumbai as my preference (I’m from Gujarat). Also, how about the holidays as I would need to travel a lot to Gujarat and MP due to personal reasons for the next 2-3 years.

    • If you are from Gujarat then probably Central Excise Gujarat is fine for you as you’d be in your home state for the most part of your career. But if you want to switch to PO then you should give technical resignation and join PO post. There are many uncertainties regarding future human resources policies of Customs & Central Excise as it is said that GST is coming very fast. Central Excise would be merged into GST and Indian Customs can be an independent department. Any guess about transfers and other things would not be right at this point. Keep searching and reading for more answers.

Thanks and best wishes for your career.

  6. I have been selected for preventive officer in CGL 2015 and i m from kanpur
i m confused between mumbai and kolkata.
Some guys say go for mumbai.
Bt kolkata is nearer than mumbai from Kanpur, better connectivity, cheaper, and less transit time during job.
Guys any other factor which should i consider?????
    Please suggest

    • If you are asked for preference, you should opt Kolkata if it’s nearer to your home. All other factors remain more or less same. You’d be able to manage at both the places.
